Well, those of us who weren’t thrilled when Leonardo DiCaprio took on a film version of Blue can breathe a sigh of relief. He’s dropped out of the project as the lead, but is still producing. I have to admit, I was getting used to having the guy play McGee. Now it seems wide open. James Mangold (Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma, etc.) is slated to direct.

gee willikers, that’s great news. now if they’d just choose to adapt one of the stronger McGee novels instead of Deep Blue, it’d be even better. how about “A Purple Place for Dying”? much much more fun.

i hope they do it on a low budget, and hire some unknown guy who can act, and who can fit the demands of the character. and if they’re willing to junk “Deep Blue” in favor of one of the other books, i’d be willing to write the screenplay cheap.
Stephen…check out what I was posting when you replied. I agree, no one short, please. And lifts, they don’t cut it either. Blue is good to start with. I just finished Amber again, and that was excellent. Had forgotten how good it was.
In a related topic, I began reading “A Friendship: The Letters of Dan Rowan and John D. MacDonald.” Great gems of information in the first 40 pages.
Just in case you don’t know, Dick Martin and Dan Rowan were a comedy duo who wrote and performed the break through TV program “Laugh-In” from 1968 to 1973. It was considered a breakthrough TV program. (This info is for the younger guys here.)
Rowan, in an early letter of their correspondence from 1964 to 1974), said to JDM about Travis that “I simply wanted to be like him, to have all those qualities and by association be admired.”

Chuck Connors
Without consulting JDM first, four fellows (from Goodson-Todman, producers) met with JDM to try to convince him to sign over the TV rights for Travis. Their choice for Travis was Chuck Connors! OMG, Chuck Connors!
JDM wrote Rowan that they (the producers) kept saying “How much? and I kept saying I wasn’t going to talk price because he wasn’t for sale, not to G-T, not to anybody.” JDM was one smart man.
In his reply Rowan said of Connors “He is a typical Hollywood choice, you see. They only see the exterior and Trav is a big guy and Connors is a big guy, so there you are.”
This is all good stuff, the book. And when I come across something pertinent to our conversation, I’ll share it with you all.
